Maintaining Your Water Heater

One of the most crucial components in your home is the water heater. It gets used constantly as it heats water every day for showers, washing the dishes, doing the laundry and much more. After running for such a long time, the water heater can fall into disrepair and it can begin to run inefficiently. When this happens, you will start to spend more money on your energy bill and you will see that your water will begin to get colder faster. There may be times when you need to call in a plumber to make sure the water heater is working correctly. However, there are some steps that you can take yourself to make sure that the water heater is properly maintained.

1. Flush Out Sediment. Over time, you may begin to hear your water heater making noise. This could sound like popping noises or like there are little stones hitting the side of the water heater from the inside. This is because over time, sediment will begin to build up on the inside of the water heater tank. This can cause damage to the water tank and can also make the water heater less efficient. Depending on how many people you have in your home, and how much water you use, it is recommended that you flush the tank 1 to 2 times per year.

2. Insulation. Another great way to make sure that your water heater stays efficient and lasts a long time is to insulate both the tank and the pipes surrounding the water heater. When you insulate the tank and the pipes, the water will stay hotter for longer. This prevents the burner from turning on as frequently. This will prolong the life of the heater and save you on energy costs as well.

3. Check the Anode Rod. An anode rod is used to collect potentially corrosive elements so that they do not affect other parts of the water tank. After a while the rod will also become corroded and will need to be replaced. You can remove the rod to check to see if there is corrosion. If the rod is coated in calcium you may need to buy a new one.

These are just a few of the simple things that you can do yourself so that your water heater can run efficiently and save you money on your energy costs. If there are persisting problems or more complicated issues, you will want to contact a plumber such as JJ Bafaro Inc to help.
